Internet Marketing is all about making a profit. Profit can be defined as the difference between total sales and total costs, assuming that this figure is positive. Businesses focus all their efforts on bringing in profits for their owners or shareholders. What can little old you do to compete with the 'big boys'? It is an age old question but it does not have an age old answer. The short answer is that there is much the individual can do to compete against the larger business and take their fair share of the profits.

Larger companies have for many reasons operational difficulties that can more easily be overcome by a smaller company. For example the larger company is often not as flexible as the smaller one because they can not easily make changes at short notice which may effect large parts of their production lines and would take too long to organize. A small company with a smaller operation could possibly make changes several times per day to accommodate the needs of their customers and change their image, strategy or approach based on current events in the changing marketplace. There would be fewer levels of hierarchy to go through to have a complaint or request heard and acted upon. This would make the smaller company more responsive. Being responsive to your customers will help make you attractive to your customers. Attracting customers and meeting their needs in a satisfactory manner means you are more likely to make profit.

The most important thing you must do if you want to profit in business is plan. Planning ahead is so often overlooked these days. So many people think they know the market, they know their product, and they know their customers. They are doomed to failure because the very act of planning will open your eyes to possibilities that they might not previously have thought likely.

In planning for profit... I say planning for profit because if you do not plan for profit you are planning to fail... there are some obvious things you should look at.

  1. Your Product.
  2. Your Strengths.
  3. Your Weaknesses.
  4. Your Marketplace.
  5. Your Competition.
  6. Supporting Products.
  7. The Likelihood of another product rendering yours obsolete. And when that is likely to happen.
  8. Other Product Lines.

All the rules and common sense that applies to bricks and mortar also apply to internet marketing. Internet marketing could be considered business in its purest form. You have a product or service. You have a seller and a prospective buyer. In internet marketing as in all other forms of business, it is up to the seller to prove himself and his product to the customer.

This is where the successful and the failed marketers part company. To be successful in internet marketing you must prove to your site visitor that you are a worthy seller or they will assume that you are a con man trying to rip them off. This is the image that many people have of many webmasters. Where did they get this idea? Well the media are constantly raising the alarm about identity theft and credit card fraud etc. The prospective buyers are afraid because they find it difficult or impossible to tell if they are dealing with a bona fide merchant or a criminal or even just an incompetent dummy.

So you now must prove yourself to your site's visitors or they will not buy your product. The experienced internet marketer will understand this and take steps to reassure his visitors. They do this by displaying recognised labels for organisations that are known to vet their users and maintain high standards. And by using recognised brand names and payment systems.

It also helps to sell well known brand names so that prospective buyers will know that they are getting quality. Don't let your customers' changing need get in the way of profit. Change with your customers and continue to meet their needs and continue to make profit.
